A battery powered turntable for photography

In this mini-project, I will introduce the construction of a turntable for photography.

The idea of having a turntable for photographing products and parts is interesting. I had plans to complete my photography equipment for my business, and one of them was definitely having a turntable.

Proper presentation is crucial for a business that relies on product sales. We need to be able to show the quality of the filament by printing the pieces, and along with that, our design abilities and artistic taste find an opportunity to be displayed.

In digital marketing, it is a well-known phrase that the customer buys the photo of the product and then receives the product. From the first day I started 3D printing with FILABEST and I wanted to publish samples of its prints, I used the same facilities and took the best photos.

What I always do for any project is search and search. First I try to answer the question whether the answer I found for a question or need is appropriate?

The second question I ask is, do different people with more experience choose the same path that I chose?

Finally, the idea of making this simple turntable came to my mind, which used more beautiful effects to film the printed parts and helped us in the business of producing filament.

Turntables, in addition to simple rotation, provide more possibilities for professional photography. Features such as shooting intervals, setting angles, changing speed, connecting to Bluetooth, etc.

In order to be able to manage my time, I created a simple plan that meets my needs and worked on the method. I considered the design assumptions I wanted:

  • Use a battery
  • Low rotation speed for more quality in video recording (for more speeds I can increase and compensate the playback speed in the software)
  • Prevent vibration of long and light parts in turntable tray
  • Keep the overall height low for better photography and video

A good turntable should be small in height and easy to remove in photography. As a result, it creates the feeling of the product floating in the photo. One of the important principles of industrial photography is to pay full attention to the product itself so that the viewer is not distracted by anything else.
Another point in the motorized turntable is the noise less than 50 decibels, which is suitable for filming. Although the sound can be removed, the noise can be removed with the software or a background music can be played.
Turntable should have mental rotation and not wiggle. Wobble, especially in long pieces, shows itself and the piece rotates unstable and the final quality decreases.

Reforms

For the gears, I first considered Module 2 and then decided to make it smaller. In the smaller module, the gears are smaller and the forces are transmitted in smaller steps, which will make the movement smoother.

The problem of vibrating of the tray is quite visible in long parts and reduces the rotation quality of the display piece. Therefore, I recommend using fewer modules for the gears.

The next point is that calculating the gear modulus requires engineering work. Gear width and modulus should basically be analyzed based on axial loads, gear life and material, and type of load applied. But our hand is in 3D printing and I can print all kinds of modules without any penalty. Of course, due to 3D printing strategies, I consider other special considerations.
